Life at Resolution: Bo, Concept and 2D Artist

We wouldn’t be able to make games without our concept and 2D artists. In this edition of Our Life at Resolution blog series, Bo shares her experience at Resolution Games.

What is your favorite part about working at Resolution Games?

My favorite part is the good vibes and positive atmosphere! I think you can tell that this is a studio that genuinely believes in the concept "happy employees will create better products in the end", which in my opinion is such a valuable quality to find in your workplace.

Tell us about some projects you've worked on, and challenges you’ve encountered

As a concept and 2D artist at Resolution, I get a lot of variety in the tasks and projects that I work on. This can be anything from working on environments, storyboards, UI elements, hero art, and more. Every project has its own style, which can vary from cartoony and colorful, to grim and dark, fantasy, sci fi, or realism.

I've gone from making hand painted textures and stylized characters in Glimt: the Vanishing at the Starlight Hotel, then adapting to the Angry Birds art style, to making futuristic sporty mechs and customizations in Ultimechs. It's fun to face new challenges and see that there's always new things to learn. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone, which admittedly has been scary at times, but it's rewarding to see how much I've improved since I started working at Resolution Games!

Another one of my favorite tasks, still to this day, was making storyboards for the animated psychic detective visions in Glimt: The Vanishing at the Starlight Hotel. I also enjoyed making the splash art for the menu buttons in Ultimechs. It was a really fun project!

How do you collaborate with your colleagues at Resolution Games?

Thanks to Resolution's hybrid model we get the benefits of both remote and office work. There’s the days when I work from home where I can purely focus on art and concepts. Then there are the days in the office where I’m able to sync with my team, have meetings, participate in playtests and enjoy those spontaneous moments of discussion and creativity that happen more naturally when you’re in person. It's the best out of both worlds in my opinion.

Can you tell us about some of the fun things happening at Resolution Games, outside the daily work routine?

In the #after-work channel on slack anyone can ping and ask if people want to tag along on events happening, and there’s usually lots of initiative to hangout and do all sorts of fun stuff after work. Like k-pop dance practice, singing, board game evenings, but also just regular after work hangouts where we chill in the office together. The Ultimechs team recently went to an arcade together to celebrate our game launch! We're a fairly competitive bunch so you can imagine what that was like. I won't go into details, but it was one intense evening of Japanese rhythm games, pool, air hockey and shuffleboard.

Another fun thing to mention is that our employees come from many different parts of the world, so it's not uncommon for someone to bring treats from their country to the office for everyone to try .

What excites you about being in the VR/AR games space?

What makes a good PC game or good mobile game, doesn’t necessarily translate well into VR/AR, so there’s lots of unexplored territory. It’s exciting to be part of something that’s quite new and that's quickly evolving and improving.

I like the immersiveness and physical aspect of VR, and I think there's lots of potential to create many interesting game experiences that are different than flatscreen games.

What do you look forward to learning at Resolution Games?

I want to keep sharpening my craftsmanship and find new ways to speed up my process. I also hope to voice-act in one of our titles someday.
