Creating Dedicated Mixed Reality Mayhem with Spatial Ops

At Resolution Games, we’re always experimenting to discover what’s possible when you combine big ideas with new technologies. Sometimes these experiments make their way into the public eye, like when we showed off Demeo running on next generation Snapdragon-powered AR glasses at AWE, or when Meta showed our early Quest Pro experiment Fish Under Our Feet in a showcase for their Presence platform.

Players caught a glimpse of another of our experiments in October when we shared footage from Spatial Ops on Twitter — and the reaction from our community was incredible. So incredible, in fact, that we soon realized we’d need to get this into the hands of players even if the project isn’t quite complete yet. So in December, as part of the cavalcade of announcements made during the Resolution Games Showcase, we launched Spatial Ops into open beta.

Welcome to Spatial Ops, Agent

Spatial Ops is the industry’s first mixed-reality multiplayer shooter with co-location.

It’s a team-based shooter where instead of first or third-person gameplay, the player is the avatar. It’s their movements, their actions, and their skill that separates success from failure. Imagine Counter-Strike without the mouse and keyboard, taking place in the real-world, with a dedicated digital overlay giving you access to virtual weapons and environmental components.

As a location-based experience, Spatial Ops shares some commonalities with real-world experiences like laser tag or paintball — but because the weapons and set pieces are virtual, players can experience incredible moments that would never be safe to convincingly mimic in a physical experience. If you’re not sure what I mean by that, just fire up the rocket launcher. ;)

Players that host matches in Spatial Ops – and we really do mean host, because you’ll be inviting friends into a real-world location – will create playable spaces by mapping real-world objects and placing digital ones, creating a battle map that is shared to every other player in their match.

There’s really nothing else like Spatial Ops available for players today. In the future we’ll share a blog post that talks about the technical challenges we needed to innovate around to bring a game like this to life — so watch this space!

A Passion for Passthrough

Spatial Ops isn’t the first mixed reality experience that we’ve made available to players. Thanks to the addition of passthrough play on Quest 2 and Quest Pro, we’ve already delivered compelling mixed reality updates to previously released games like Blaston and Demeo

But while it may not be our first, Spatial Ops is the first game we’ve launched that’s built from the ground up for mixed reality.

If you’d like to try it out for yourself, the Spatial Ops open beta is now available for free on Sidequest. You can also join the Discord to communicate with our team directly, learn tips and tricks and more.
