How Cutting-Edge Technologies Are Taking Home Sports to the Next Level

We recently announced that we’re launching Home Sports, the first multi-sport that gets you moving in mixed reality on the Quest 3 lineup of devices this year. But how did this game come to be? In this new blog series, we’ll take you behind the scenes to explore the cutting-edge technologies that played a key role in its development.

At Resolution Games, we enjoy being on the forefront of new technologies, always seeking out ways to refine our processes and create better games. We’ve spent countless hours experimenting with various tools—some turned out to be perfect fits, while others required adjustments, and a few just didn’t quite align with our goals. However, through all this exploration, we’ve identified five Meta technologies that significantly enhanced the Home Sports experience.

Let’s start by sharing one of the standout tools we’ve integrated: The Boundary API, specifically its boundaryless feature.

What Is the Boundary API?

For those who aren’t familiar, boundaries in VR are a safety mechanism that allows users to set limits in their play area. When a player nears the edge of this space, visual cues appear to alert them. The boundaryless feature, as its name suggests, removes those limits, creating a more open and uninterrupted experience.

How We Implemented the Boundaryless Feature in Home Sports

By incorporating the boundaryless feature into Home Sports, we unlocked a new level of freedom for players. They can move seamlessly from one room to another, whether that’s heading from the living room to a bedroom or grabbing batteries for their controllers, all without having to pause or exit the game. Even sitting back and watching their friends play remains a smooth, immersive experience.

On the technical side, we appreciated the ability to save the play space location. This feature ensures that both players and developers can easily pick up right where they left off, without the need to recalibrate the play area each time.

This boundaryless approach has enhanced the overall gameplay and allowed us to offer an experience that feels more dynamic and less restricted.
